Planning Instruction Using Activity Structures

What are activity structures and why are they useful?

Activity structures is one of several phrases to refer to instructional patterns that teachers rely on to establish a sense of routine and students become aware of quickly in each of their classes. Activity structures are instructional patterns that teachers repeatably use, e.g. lecture, whole-class discussion, lab activity, inquiry/investigation, quiz, test, exam, opening activity, closing activity, etc. Students understand these patterns as a predictable feature of each teacher's class. By coming back to the same classroom patterns, teachers can plan more efficiently and spend less time introducing students to new instructions.
